Another Yakitori Party

We must have done yakitori at least once a week so far, no matter the weather, with friends or by ourselves. It is definitely fun to have a few friends over and sit around the little grill. Every time we try something new or make some adjustments. Last night we had Spam musubi on the side along with my Japanese style potato salad to feed a couple of hungry friends. For once, the weather was beautiful. A very enjoyable evening.

Thursday Adventure

After the wet chilly weekend, we've been blessed with beautiful, perfect weather. The extended forecast looked promising. Thursday Joe took a day off with me to go fishing. We packed for Apple Creek. This time we knew the drill. Much smoother trip over all.
Fish, especially rainbow trout, were playful. We could not catch the "Big" ones who are ever so particular, but we caught quite a few fish ranging from 3" up to 10-11".
Most importantly the river looked stunning. The weather... perfect. No monster fish caught on this trip, but neither of us lost a lure!
We packed pasties and a can of beer for lunch. The best picnic you could have.
After a wonderful adventure, back to reality, we had to figure out what's for dinner. I'd been wanting potstikers for a while....
Without even trying, our Thursday dinner turned out to be a feast, celebrating our special Thursday.

Last Weekend

Last week our little town celebrated its mining heritage all week. Saturday night's firework display put a great end to it all. The only thing about fireworks this far north in summer is that we have to wait patiently till the sky gets dark enough, which is almost 11pm. Next morning we didn't get up really early, but early enough to go fishing.
Went to our current usual spot, not as adventurous as Apple Creek (like our last post) but the river continues downstream where Joe hasn't explored. So every time he has been extending his trail to fish further, which involves him swinging his machete like a mad man to break the trail with tall grass and tangling branches. Basically he goes till his arms and hands protest. Sometimes he needs to take game trails (like wild animals) to avoid impenetrable tree stands or fallen trees by the river. That's how he came across these cool cedar trees. I feel like I need to paint them.
Fishing (or catching) was not the best this day. But it was just as exciting to push our trail further to discover and challenge new holes to fish. At that moment, the size of fish ALMOST doesn't matter. Almost. We hope we donated enough lures this day to the new stretch of the river to offer to our Fish God. Next time, next time.....

Stay-cation Day 2

Ever since mid-June we've been wanting to take a trip out to our beloved Apple Creek. Now that we have to pack and either walk or bike in to avoid wash-outs, it makes a lot more time-consuming trip. The weather had been too wet and unstable for the adventure. Finally today we were able to venture out. We had a perfect breakfast: homemade rhubarb pies with ice cream and coffee. Our way bicycling in with backpacks was not easy, going through wet muddy path in the mosquito-infested woods.
Once we got to the river, all our doubt disappeared. It was definitely worth it.
As we headed downstream, fishing got better. We both caught a nice mix of Brook trout, Browns, and Rainbows, in various sizes. The biggest was Joe's 13" Brown. We must have stayed on the river for close to 3 hours. It was one of the most exciting fishing trip. Joe's Dad would have loved it, too.

Stay-cation Day 1

We were both off this weekend and enjoyed all the things we love around here. Yesterday morning we went fishing. Right at the beginning, where Joe wouldn't have thought there were good sized fish, I pulled out a 13" Brown. Well, the rest of the trip was nearly fishless. We suspected it was due to the unstable weather.
The afternoon stayed mostly sunny, so we took a little hike to the Black Rocks. A bit too windy for skipping rocks.
Only appropriate to stop at Blackrocks Brewery for tasty beer.
We had another batch of yakitori for dinner, so Joe could try a new type of charcoal. First we grilled my fish, simply seasoned with sea salt. A perfect appetizer for Kayo.
