Easter

Today was a grey misty cool Easter Sunday. But it was not windy, so we headed out for a little fishing first thing in the morning. Rain held just enough for Joe to have his first official cigar of the season on a fishing trip. No fish, but we enjoyed the quiet. A bit too chilly to stay out for long.
And definitely too hungry to continue fishing. When we got home, Joe cooked his special pancake breakfast. It hit the spot and warmed up both of us.
Happy Easter to all!

Crazy Weather

This weekend was beautiful and warm, reaching almost 70 at one point. Sunday morning we got out early enough to beat most of fishermen. Yet after 10 minutes, our quiet was disturbed by a boat coming up the river. We moved to another spot, the mouth of the river (in picture), and yet again we saw a half dozen boats passing by. And zero fish. Oh well.
Joe wasn't feeling good, either. He was actually having a bad case of "weather pain" like none he'd felt before. His shins usually ache when high/low pressure systems come and go. But this weekend he felt like he was getting ill (except he still had appetite). At 3 am early Monday morning the storm system finally hit us, bringing strong gusts, thunder, lightening, rain, and hail, which woke both of us up. That's when Joe felt all the pain gone. The storm was in fact quite severe, causing multitudes of damages. And the temperatures had dropped. This morning (Tuesday) we woke up to almost 10" of heavy wet snow!
We basically went backward about a month. Crazy, crazy weather. The poor robin sitting on a tree branch is wondering where Spring went. We know this snow pile won't last too long. It's still April in the UP. Snow-- we expect, but not hurricane or whatever we had prior to the snow.

Fishing License Renewed

Our fishing license expired at the end of March. Not that any of trout streams are open for season, but this Sunday was a gorgeous day. We definitely got a case of fishing fever. After our fishing license renewed and our first choice steelhead fishing spots all taken, we had to find another spot, which Joe thought was the mouth of a river where steelhead and spring salmon are starting to run. When he looked up Google Map at home, he realized we were off by one bridge. Still, we each caught a fish, though only a sucker, which we now know was a confused fish not actually running up the river correctly. We also greeted many people walking, biking, jogging by, plus listened to a couple of geese making all sorts of noise. We really missed the quiet and solitude of Apple Creek.
Since we were close to the lake, we had to check out the break walls. No fish, but the breeze definitely felt like spring. We enjoyed the fresh air.
This weekend Joe decided to try his hand at yakitori, Japanese style grilled chicken on skewers. He's not quite ready to throw a yakitori party yet, but we'll be having this on summer evenings this year. First, we need another bag of charcoal.
A little side note: I tried making Bento lunch one day last week when we were completely out of bread. It's a lot of work/ multi-tasking to make, but surely makes lunch time more fun.
