Opening Day of Trout Season

Today was the first day of fishing season. Cold enough that paddles were covered with thin ice, which is normal at the end of April. I got to accompany Joe to Apple Creek on this important day, carrying Joe's dad's spirit.
Of course, no fish. The water is too cold for trout, except we could hook lake trout this early in the season. Not today, as we fully expected.
I was surprised I hadn't forgotten my casting skills... though just the moment I thought that, I snagged a lure in the tree branches. Good thing I bought a couple of lures yesterday, along with my fishing lisence. And the highlight of our fishing trip today was the yummy sandwich Joe packed!! It was worth getting up early.
Slowly but surely spring is coming. Marsh marigolds are starting to bloom in warm spots.
And morel mushrooms are up... not everywhere. Joe found one on our fishing trip. Later in the afternoon he and Mark drove 30 miles south to one of the secret spots to find a bag full. Nice ones! Hopefully we can soon report our catching fish.

New Batch of Kimchi

My first batch of kimchi had been gone for a couple of weeks. I finally got around to make a new batch the other day. Though we already tried some for dinner the same day, I like to let it rest a bit in the fridge. It only gets better!
To carry my Korean cooking theme, we had Bibimbap for dinner that evening. Pretty tasty.

Winter, Spring, Winter...

It turned out that our weather men were right about their snow prediction... the drizzly rain changed into sleet and eventually white snow the other day. Enough snow to cover the ground white, to remind us that this picture is somewhat normal for this time of a year up here. This morning is another cold, wet, sleety one. That's OK. I'll be at work all day anyway. Hopefully it will warm up tomorrow on my day off. Mushrooms should grow once the temperatures warm up, too.

Signs of Spring

Though they were predicting some snow for today, we woke up to a bit of spring rain, much needed rain. Our dwarf daffodils look happy.
And our robins started nesting in that almost fallen apart old birdhouse by the grape vines again.
Yesterday Joe went to check out one of his morel mushroom hunting spots... too cold, way too dry, but he managed to find one small morel.

Happy Easter!

We hope everyone is having a nice Easter weekend. We joined Joe's family for Easter brunch and Easter egg hunt this morning as you might have expected. But yesterday we went to see an exciting regional cage fighting/ Maui Thai event. There were a couple of TKO's, including one 2-second match. The best and most palm-sweating match was the only one female match (below). A bloody nose and everything. Crazy!!!
Four hours of not-so-Easter-like entertainment, but memorable.

La La La Lambeau Field!

This past weekend we drove down to Green Bay to see the Murphys, our belated Christmas visit finally. The main event was a tour of Lambeau Field, owned by the city and thousands of Packer fans. We are proud to be one of them! The tour took us all the way up to the sky box seats. And even down through the players tunnel onto the field. Now that was quite a perspective! The empty off season field is currently undergoing another major construction. Impressive. At last, a snapshot of all four of us at the field. We do look a bit chilly... that's Green Bay. Our Packer players are tough!!Thank you, Murphys, for the fun weekend!
