Fish Wednesday

The day after Fat Tuesday is the beginning of Lent. Joe can't eat meat today, Ash Wednesday, and every Friday till Easter. And Kayo doesn't believe in frozen fish sticks, so she needs to be creative in cooking on those days. Joe says we can't eat meat that had fur or feather (beef, pig, chicken, venison, bear!!) but we can eat things with scales or any reptiles (so that's fish, shrimp, aligator, frog.... oh, great!). Kayo decided it would have to be variations of fish and shrimp. Luckly we can get fresh lake fish from our local fish house.

Tonight we had shrimp curry over jasmine rice. And boy was that gooooood, so good that there were no leftovers. Not a bad start to Lent.

Fat Tuesday!!

Last night we had to go out and celebrate Fat Tuesday officially at Lagniappe, our favorite creole restaurant in town. Kayo had to work till 7:30, and Joe patiently waited past his normal dinner time only snacking on an apple. Meantime, our local TV broadcasted the restaurant of our interest, packed, I mean packed!! and filled with food, drinks, more drinks, live music, Mardi Gras beads flying.....
Having walked into this madness, we were seated to share a booth with another couple. And the crazy thing was that Joe took a Russian class with the guy, Andy, in High School. They hadn't come across each other since. So while our long wait for our beer we had nice introductions of each others (we didn't get beer till after our food showed up!! and that's how long a waiting line was at the bar). Not to make you all hungry, but we feasted on: crawfish nachos, shrimp poboy, and mud pie for dessert. Yummmmm. And we all got enough dangly beads around the neck, with a 1/2 glass of water spilt in the middle of our table, and all that fun for drinking only one beer each! Madness!! We wished all of you had been there with us.

Lazy Sunday

Our wintery weather continued... and it was Sunday. Both of us had a day off from work. Except for going grocery shopping we enjoyed staying in. This doesn't make an interesting blog post, does it? Oh, but today our blog made an official debut to some of our friends... that's the news. Other than that we rented and watched a couple of FREE kids movies, and cooked and had venison roast dinner with wild rice and corn. Kayo is happy to have enough leftover meat for the week.
Good night everyone....
As you might have guessed, yes, it's still snowing.

Lake Effect Snow Advisory

Up here in the north our weekend plans don't always take place as we plan... like this weekend due to the wintery weather. Our own Lake Effect Snow alone isn't so bad since we can expect it most everyday during our long winter months (November through April). But when it gets combined with another storm system from south, like yesterday, you really want to get off the road. That's exactly what the Murphys did yesterday morning on their way up from Green Bay to visit us. Most of our weekend had been planned, including dinner at Vierling with the famous micro brewed beer, but now our plans turned blank white as the snow whipped outside. Now what do we do??

We went snowshoeing on Songbird Trail by Little Presque Point (Lake Superior shore), thinking the Murphys would have enjoyed on either skis or snowshoes. Then we had ice cream at Jilbert (a hometown dairy) to complete our snowy outing.

And guess what? It's snowing again this morning....

Gotta Love the Cold!

So this is what we woke up to in the morning of the blizzard. Our poor Subaru in the photo.
Since, we got dug, plowed, and even greeted by the shunshine.

Tonight's big event in town actually loved the cold and snow. As I type, UP 200, the annual sled dog race is taking place (they won't be back in town till Sunday morning). We braved out in the cold to view some teams taking off on the downtown main street.

Polarbear in a snowstorm... blank

In the middle of a blizzard... I really thought my wife was typing away so prolifically. But she wasn't, she was fooling around with the settings. Well now it's time for bed. So maybe she'll write something tommorrow. Goodnight.
